Pakistan New Currency Real Updates | January 2026

Current Status: Designs Ready, Awaiting Cabinet Approval

As of January 14, 2026

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has finalized preparations for a new series of Pakistani Rupee banknotes. Updated designs with advanced security features have been shortlisted and sent to the federal cabinet for final approval.

Once approved, printing will begin at the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC) and is expected to take about two months. If approval comes in early 2026, printing could finish by March/April, with public circulation likely starting later in 2026.

The rollout may happen gradually (one denomination at a time) or all at once—SBP is still deciding. This is part of a routine update every 15–20 years to fight counterfeiting and modernize currency.

What About Polymer Notes or One Denomination in Plastic?

January 2026 Reports

Some media reports mention a plan to introduce one denomination as a polymer (plastic) note for testing durability, while others remain paper-based. If successful, more could follow in the future.

However, this is still under discussion—no final decision or launch has occurred. Current notes are all paper. No official confirmation of a full switch to polymer exists yet.

Important: Old Notes Remain 100% Valid

Official SBP Position

All existing denominations (Rs. 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000) will continue to be legal tender even after new notes are introduced. There is no plan to demonetize or invalidate old cash.

The transition will be smooth with no disruption to daily transactions. SBP has repeatedly stated this in past announcements.

Beware of Fake News & Viral Posts!
Many fake images and videos of "new Pakistani currency notes" are spreading on WhatsApp, TikTok, and social media. These show imaginary designs, polymer notes, or altered existing notes. SBP has clarified multiple times: no new notes are in circulation yet. Only trust official SBP website (sbp.org.pk), press releases, or major verified news outlets. Report scams to authorities.
